Amethyst is a purple gem from the quartz family. Its characteristic colour, whose intensity may differ, is influenced by ionizing radiation on a small admixture of iron compounds. Brazilian amethysts boast more giant, purple crystals, often with goethite and even calcite inclusions.

Geodes are spherical rocks that contain hollow cavities lined with crystals. Amethyst geodes are deposited in Brazilian state the Rio Grande do Sul. There the geodes are formed within massive flood basalt stretching as far as 800 km2. As the basalt cooled down, chambers within its structure formed, creating a space for cavities infilled with silicate solutions. Some of these geodes can be very large. Citrine geodes are made by heat-treating of the amethyst geodes. The resulting geode's colour depends on the original amethyst's look; the darker is the colour of the amethyst, the more intense is the yellow of the citrine geode.

Use: Geodes represent a charming interior decoration as well as a valuable piece of a mineralogical collection.
