Orthoceras is an extinct cephalopod that lived 350-400 millions years ago in the shallow seas of the present-day Morocco (in the Erfoud site). The name means straight horn, referring to its characteristic long, straight, conical shell. The petrified shell of this animal is preserved in black limestone. The mineral's shape copies the shape of the animal. It has an elongated shape with a smooth lustrous surface.
