You can recognise lapis for its striking blue colour, which is influenced by lazurite mineral in its structure. The name lapis refers to an Arabian word lazuli, which means blue. In its traditional deposits, e.g. in Afghanistan, people have been mining it since ancient times. It used to be an ingredient for blue dye called ultramarine. If we look at its chemical structure, lapis is a rock formed by lazurite, pyrite grains, calcite and mica.
