Quartz with hematite inclusions is a very attractive and sought-after mineral, thanks to the striking contrast between the clarity of the quartz and the reddish-brown coloration of the hematite. The quartz is mostly milky, partly clear and translucent. The hematite inclusions appear in the form of flakes, needles, or plates. The color of the inclusions is highly variable, ranging from bright red to golden brown and even black. Hematite inclusions are formed during the crystallization of quartz when hematite particles are trapped inside the quartz. This material is very popular among collectors and jewelers for its attractive and unique appearance. Among the best-known localities are areas in Congo, especially the Katanga region, from which our material originates. Other notable occurrences are in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil and in the states of Arkansas and Colorado in the USA.
